Early Pregnancy Scan (6–15 Weeks): Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of an Early Pregnancy Scan?
This scan is performed to confirm a pregnancy is viable, see the baby’s heartbeat, determine if you are carrying multiples (twins), and accurately date the pregnancy.
How early can I book this scan?
We recommend booking from 6 weeks gestation. Before this point, the pregnancy may be too small to see clearly, even with high-specification equipment.
Will the scan be external or internal?
Between 6 and 10 weeks, a transvaginal (internal) scan is often necessary to get a clear view of the heartbeat. After 10 weeks, an abdominal scan is usually sufficient.
Do I need a full bladder?
Yes. For an abdominal scan, a full bladder helps “lift” the uterus for a better view. Please drink 1–2 pints of water an hour before your appointment.
What if I am experiencing pain or bleeding?
This scan can help identify the cause of symptoms and confirm if the pregnancy is located safely within the uterus (ruling out an ectopic pregnancy).
What happens if a problem is detected?
Our sonographers are experts in early pregnancy care. If there are any concerns, we provide an immediate clinical report and help you navigate the next steps with your local Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU).
