Fetal Well-Being & Growth Scan (15–42 Weeks): Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main purpose of this scan?
This scan monitors your baby’s development by measuring the head, abdomen, and femur to ensure they are growing at the expected rate for their gestational age.
What else is checked besides growth?
We assess the baby’s heart rate, movement, the volume of amniotic fluid (liquor) surrounding the baby, and the position and health of the placenta.
Do you check the blood flow to the baby?
Yes. We perform Doppler ultrasound to measure the blood flow in the umbilical cord. This ensures the baby is receiving sufficient oxygen and nutrients from the placenta.
Can I find out the sex of my baby during this scan?
Yes, if you wish to know and the baby is in a suitable position, our sonographer can identify the sex. This is included as part of the well-being check at no extra cost.
What happens if the measurements are too small or too large?
The measurements are plotted on a growth chart. If the baby’s growth falls outside the normal range, we provide a clinical report and facilitate a referral to your NHS midwife or hospital for further monitoring.
Do I need a full bladder for this scan?
From 15 weeks onwards, a full bladder is generally not necessary as the baby is large enough to see clearly. You can attend this appointment feeling comfortable.
